Origin: Cadenza "Cadence" Ducoeur was born and raised in Finite City, in an apartment over her father Dorian's night club called the Heartthrob. Music was always an aspect of her life; everyone in her family loved music of varying sorts, and her mother Melody would sometimes perform for the club. Melody encouraged Cadence to learn to sing and dance at a young age, though she fell out of practice after Melody died of illness when Cadence was seven years old.
After Melody's death, Dorian's enthusiasm for running the club floundered, to the point where it was difficult to get new help in except for his brother Eli, who took charge of most things while Dorian grew reclusive. Cadence was also brought on to help when she was thirteen, and when she wasn't in school spent most of her time helping clean up after their customers. Dorian spent most of his time in his room, muttering about looking for someone, or sometimes she'd hear him and Eli arguing in hushed tones about something. A lot of responsibility for Cadence fell upon Eli as well, and in time it meant that she was closer with her uncle than with her father, though his obsession with whatever he was looking for worried her. When Cadence was sixteen, Dorian ran out the door yelling that he'd 'found him,' and hasn't been seen since.
Two years later, after a particularly bad day of missing her parents and the Heartthrob's situation at an all-time low, Cadence was visiting her mother's grave hoping it could help her find guidance. Suddenly, the earth opened up under her and she plummeted into a strange underground laboratory. Hitting her head when she reached the floor, the last thing she remembered seeing before losing consciousness was a slender, blue-skinned figure standing over her. She faintly recalled hearing the word 'Necrodancer'.
The next several days were a blur of agony and strange surroundings as she was tortured and experimented on in ways she couldn't think clearly enough in the moment to describe. She didn't know what he was doing, why, how, or for how long, all she remembered was pain and the night she escaped, breaking free of her bonds and making a mad dash for the nearest exit she could find. She wasn't alone, there were others just like her around her, but in her panic all she could think to do was run. The next thing she remembered was waking up in the hospital with a huge scar on her chest where her heart would be. She didn't tell the police anything about the experience, claiming she didn't remember it, which was only a partial truth - the rest she didn't think they would believe.
Ever since that incident, Cadence noticed something strange. Whenever she heard music, she would find herself locking into step with it, more rigidly than she even did just out of habit from her dance lesson days. On top of that, her heart would accelerate at the sound of music, matching its rhythm, and while it played she found newfound strength and agility that she'd never had, and knowledge of various forms of combat that she was never taught, both disappearing when the music stopped. Obviously this information terrified Cadence at first, wondering what it meant and what the Necrodancer did to her, but given that she had no intentions of finding the man and asking him, she chose over time to embrace this power and took up dancing again, only this time blending it with fighting moves. Now by night when she's not helping Eli in the club, she takes to the streets as Beatdown, a superhero fighting crime to the tune of music.
Though there are concerns as well. Sometimes in the quiet of night, Cadence wakes up with excruciating pain in her chest and her heart rate elevates to an alarming speed and the scar over her heart gets burning hot. She has no idea what this means but could a doctor even help her...?
Costume:
Cadence is a college student and works for what she can get in tips when working at the Heartthrob, which isn't always much given the anemic attendance most nights. As such, she doesn't have money to get a real super suit, especially since Eli has yet to find out about her moonlighting. So she just threw together comfortable street clothes that she feels stands out when she confronts criminals so they at least recognize her as the hero she tries to be. The belt is meant to match her headphones, which have skulls on the earphones. She's never without the headphones, even when out of 'costume,' and she always has a playlist handy of upbeat, high-speed music that's best for fighting to.
